Background: Osteoporosis and obesity at the time of menopause are thought to be a common problems, Obesity is known as protective factor of the osteoporosis. Therefore, weight reduction therapy in obese patients may be decrease bone mineral density(BMD). This study was designed to determine correlation of BMD change and weight reduction therapy in postmenopausal women.
Methods: We have studied in 36 postmenopausal women. The subjects are obese(BMI 28.8¡¾3.1kg/§³). they are managed in obesity clinic(diet therapy, formatted behavioral therapy, exercise calory consumption 200kcal, use estrogen). Weight, height, body fat and BMD(by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) were measured at inital treatment and 2 years later.
Results: The mean weight change was 5.2¡¾3.4%(3.8~15.8%) after weight reduction therapy(P<0.01). And the mean body fat, BMD change was 2.9¡¾0.9%(P<0.01), -0.04¡¾0.09%, respectively.
In result, there was no significant correlation between BMD change and weight change(weight change and spine BMD = 0.02, weight change and femur BMD = 0.09, P>0.05, partial correlation adjusted by activity, age)
Conclustion: This weight reduction therapy did not influence significant BMD change in postmenopausal obese women receiving hormone replacement therapy.
